The Herons finished second in their group.
Lionel Messi of Inter Miami will reunite with his old club, Paris Saint-Germain, in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup round of 16 after both teams advanced to the knockout stage on Monday.
Miami drew 2-2 to advance to second place after Palmeiras rallied from a two-goal deficit to secure first place in Group A.
They now play an all-Brazil match against Botafogo, who advanced from Group B in second place at the cost of the Spaniards after losing 1-0 to Atletico Madrid.
European Champions defeated the Seattle Sounders 2-0 to win the group. PSG advanced and set to face Messi and surprise package Miami.
After their unexpected victory over Porto, goals from Tadeo Allende and Luis Suarez put Miami on track for a second tournament win. However, Palmeiras made sure they advanced by scoring twice through Paulinho and Mauricio in the final ten minutes at Hard Rock Stadium.
Players and coaches from both clubs set for a reunion in the Inter Miami vs PSG clash
Miami coach Javier Mascherano, Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and their former coach, Luis Enrique, who led Barcelona to the treble in 2015, will reunite when Miami play PSG.
How did PSG qualify for the Round of 16?
Following their unexpected loss to Botafogo, European champions PSG recovered with a resounding victory in Seattle.
But Botafogo’s dramatic loss to Atletico Madrid in Pasadena, the Ligue 1 champions moved as group winners with goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Achraf Hakimi on either side of halftime.
Miami are now looking down at one of the toughest teams they are set to face in the competition. However, the Herons have nothing to lose as coming this far in the tournament has been surprising for them, given that it was hardly expected from them to secure a place in the knockout stage.
However, they will either cause one of the biggest upsets of the competition when they face PSG, or the French club will be looking to hand the Herons one of their worst defeats in history.
